Roller shutters have been around since the nineteenth century, and they are now extremely well established. And yet, with outdoor screens, drop-down screens and canopies, there are bold alternatives that have other assets to play. So how come roller shutters remain just as sought-after? At roller shutter and sun protection specialist SUYS in Nokere, Belgium, they can answer this question, but safety seems to be the key word.
CEO Thibaut Suys of SUYS experiences that people often prefer roller shutters when, as a child or in a previous home, they used to be able to enjoy the darkness and silence that roller shutters offer. According to him, this explains why even young (re)builders often go for this old-fashioned solution.
The old-fashioned, wooden roller shutters have gradually disappeared from the street scene and made way for roller shutters that have caught up in terms of design. "We profile our aluminum cabinets and roller shutter slats ourselves, and our range of colors is endless," says Suys. "As the only manufacturer in Belgium, we powder-coat in all RAL colors. This allows the end customer to choose a uniform color of slats, cabinet, guides and bottom bar, so that the shutters perfectly match the style of the home. Our full foamed aluminum profiles are qualitatively strong and can span large dimensions, while the cabinet remains compact because with our slats we bet on a small roll-up diameter of the roller shutter armor. Our roller shutter slats and cabinets have also become increasingly sophisticated over the years, allowing us to offer a suitable answer for every mounting situation."
Recently, SUYS presented the Minirol® INTEGRATED. An L-profile was developed for this unique roller shutter box, against which the finishing layer of the exterior facade is applied. This allows the roller shutter box to be seamlessly integrated into the facade and at the same time, via a flap at the bottom, remains accessible for revision. "A beautiful, invisible solution for modern homes with, for example, a crépi finish," believes Thibaut Suys.
"We have been a leading player in the sun protection and shutter market for 50 years," the CEO continued. "Our industry is very much driven by external factors, such as the weather. Summers are getting longer and heat days more extreme, therefore it simply becomes a necessity to protect buildings from overheating. And just as screens or other forms of shading are taking a bite of this pie, shutters are also shifting in response to the increasing demand for shade providers. That, too, keeps this product current."
SUYS shutters not only offer an aesthetic or insulating addition to the home, but also act as a powerful line of defense against the whims of Mother Nature, Thibaut Suys knows. "Keeping the heat out is one thing, but equally roller shutters are a physical barrier in stormy weather to keep out wind, debris and harsh rain. Shutters provide the comfort of peace of mind and privacy. That sense of security is often the most important attribute for choosing roller shutters, and that is by no means unwarranted. The firm seal that a roller shutter provides also has a burglary deterrent effect and immediately discourages any unwanted visitors. With automated controls, shutters can also be lowered and raised remotely. This visible security is worth as much as a house alarm!" the CEO is convinced.
As the only manufacturer in Belgium, SUYS guarantees full in-house integration: in-house profiling of aluminum slats and cabinets, in-house extrusion of PVC profiles, in-house powder coating and finally the assembly of the roller shutter. Everything from A to Z, from slat to shutter, in-house and in Belgium.
