The main differences between battery and wire motors

How to choose the right motor for your smart shading system

Navigating the world of smart shading solutions can be overwhelming, especially when you have to choose between battery-powered motors and wired motors for your Motionblinds system. Each option offers unique benefits and considerations that affect everything from installation to maintenance.

Battery motors have a built-in rechargeable lithium battery, making them easy to install without complicated wiring. They offer flexible control via remote control, smartphone app, voice commands or manual operation. Wired motors, on the other hand, are connected directly to the mains and require professional electrical installation. Wired motors provide constant power without the hassle of charging and can be controlled via wired switches, remotes, apps or integrated building automation systems. The choice between battery and wired motors depends on your installation preferences, maintenance requirements and desired control options.

Battery motors for residential use

Battery motors are ideal for homes, especially those with a limited number of windows. They offer hassle-free installation similar to traditional manual blinds, eliminating the need for extensive wiring. This makes retrofitting smart motorized window coverings in existing homes simple and easy. Battery-powered motors offer flexible control via wireless remotes, smartphone apps and smart home integrations, while manual operation with a pull cord or stick is also possible. For luxury homes or larger buildings with many windows, however, battery-powered motors can be less practical, as they require regular charging via a USB-C cable.

Wired motors for high-performance residential and commercial use

Wired motors are well suited for high-end homes, commercial buildings and large-scale installations such as hotels and office spaces. Their connection to the electrical grid means they do not need to be recharged, so they operate continuously and reliably. Wired motors offer robust durability and can be controlled in a variety of ways, including wall switches, remote controls, apps or integrated building automation systems. They are an excellent choice for new construction or existing homes with pre-installed wiring at the windows, providing a seamless and durable solution for advanced window treatment needs.

Battery integration in Motionblinds motors

Motionblinds sets itself apart with integrated battery technology. Most motors feature a built-in lithium battery hidden inside the motor, providing a sleek and wire-free look. The integrated battery is charged via USB-C, just like a smartphone, and supports seamless installation and operation without wires. Benefits include easy installation without wiring and convenient charging with a USB-C cable or power bank. Enjoy the convenience of wireless control with remote control, app or voice commands, in addition to manual control.

Charging your battery

Charging frequency for smart blinds varies based on battery type, usage, size of blinds and environmental factors. In general, Motionblinds motors last six to 12 months on a full charge. Heavier or frequently used window coverings, such as blinds or top-down bottom-up Honeycomb shades, may require more frequent charging. Battery life depends on how often the blinds move and their size - larger, heavier blinds consume more power. To estimate battery life, consider the number of cycles (full movements) your blinds perform before they need to be recharged.

Estimating battery life and performance

To estimate battery life, consider two important factors: usage and the size of the blind. Battery life depends on "cycles" (a full up-and-down movement) and "drop" (the height of the blind). Larger blinds with more height use more power and need to be charged sooner. Each Motionblinds motor has a specific formula for estimating how many cycles it can handle before it needs to be recharged, allowing the battery life to be accurately calculated for your window coverings.

Battery life indicator for motion displays

Motionblinds battery motors have an app-based battery status indicator and a red LED light to indicate low battery. This allows you to easily check the battery level and recharge before the battery runs out. Even when not in use, batteries suffer from self-discharge, so it's important to charge at least once a year to maintain performance. Charging takes about eight hours with a USB-C cable and 5V/2A charger, but the motor continues to work while charging.
