The MX-4 is the latest awning from markilux. This distinctively designed cassette awning has only just come onto the market, but has already been awarded a Red Dot Design Award 2023, one of the important international design prizes. Sun protection specialist markilux has already won this award several times in the Product Design category.
"Markilux products can be ascribed the attributes of 'beautifully designed', 'intelligent' and 'smart'," believes Director of Production and Technology Michael Gerling. "In recent years, we have been able to score time and again with the stylish MX family in particular, and not only with end users, but also by winning several design awards. So recently for our latest model, the cassette screen MX-4, we added a Red Dot Design Award in the Product Design category!"
"We were very pleased with the award," Gerling said. "The Red Dot is one of the largest and most renowned awards in the world, with a decades-long tradition, and awards only the best design. We have won this award before for other screens. Every time, it is a great achievement for our entire team of product developers and a confirmation of the design concepts we use, especially considering that a total of about 20,000 designs are submitted for the Red Dot every year. In 2023, in the Product Design category alone, designers and companies from 60 countries participated in 51 categories!"
"We naturally wanted to be among the top performers with the MX-4 in the Red Dot election," says the director. "The total package of simple and elegant shapes, individual LED lights in the screen and the smart lighting technology with beautiful color effects has winner quality in our opinion. The award has now officially confirmed that! The screen convinced the international expert jury in terms of functionality, appeal, utility value and responsibility for people and the environment. I believe that good design is an important expression of our brand value and we strive to continue on this successful course."
During Designers Night on June 19 at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Michael Gerling accepted the award for the MX-4 together with Sven Kröner, the Head of Development and Construction at markilux.
It has been some time since Z&R's Journal covered forms of solar shading that are not available from the regular solar shading specialist. Pilkington InsulightTM with ScreenLine® is one such product. It is insulating glass with a cavity-mounted louver, pleated or pleated blackout. Pilkington InsulightTM with ScreenLine® is the first glass product with built-in blinds to be included in the BCRG database (BCRG stands for Bureau of Control and Registration Equivalence) and thus rated as equivalent to movable exterior blinds. A quality and equivalence declaration is crucial for calculating BENG and energy labels. According to the results of the study, glass with built-in sun protection can compete with movable exterior sun protection in the color categories white and other colors in terms of sun protection values.
The Bureau of Verification Registration Equivalence is an independent organization. The quality, equivalence and EMG declarations issued by the BCRG are important for calculating the energetic and insulating performance of products and/or systems. They ensure that designers, consultants and specifiers can incorporate the values in the legally required energy performance calculation and energy saving recommendations of buildings. For users of the database - think municipal officials, building plan reviewers, EP consultants and property owners - objectively tested information on the energy performance of products and systems is of great importance. This allows them to calculate the energy performance of BENG. They can also determine, verify or improve the energy label of a new or existing building.

The trees are now green, the birds are chirping and the sun seems to have taken over from the spring rains. Many people, meanwhile, have put their gardens in order to spend the next few months outside in the garden. Luxaflex® interior designer Richelle den Hartog identifies four garden trends that should make a garden the ideal outdoor spot in 2023:
"Raw materials such as wood and steel fit perfectly into the tough, industrial style associated with the 'Raw' trend. It's okay to contrast this with some darker colors in the garden furnishings. Think matte lacquered outdoor blinds and dark, wooden garden sets. Less is more in this simple, minimalist garden trend. With blinds with a bold, striped print, garden owners can make a beautiful statement."
"The botanical trend pays tribute to nature! Trees, banana plants, lots of evergreen plants and maybe even a greenhouse are definitely not out of place with this trend. A vegetable garden or growing elements for flowers and fruit should certainly not be missing. Any color that links to nature will be shown to its best advantage here. Relax or work from home under a patio awning, everyone feels comfortable in this place."
"Bohemian" is the surprising trend where designs, materials and fabrics can be matched without limit. This trend exudes warmth with a diversity of colors, such as rust brown, ochre yellow and pink, which can be reflected in accessories and patio awnings. It is a frivolous style where rattan, outdoor rugs, textiles and cheerful accessories are not to be missed."
"Rich and natural materials fit perfectly into this tasteful trend. With cotton and linen fabrics with fine textures, combined with natural materials, such as light woods, a good base is formed. In this ton-sur-ton trend, natural tones are mixed and matched. In an instant, coziness is created as brown, beige and gray tones complement each other beautifully. This style is topped off with rattan accessories and blowing ornamental grasses for a true vacation feel."
